Wonderful Women Week is the brainchild of Jenny Cressman, who was inspired to create a celebration in honor of International Women's Day. She felt that there was an alarming lack of community effort or interest to mark the event sufficiently. So, in true Jenny style, she did something about it!
The first WWW took place March 8 - 12, 2011, at reVIBE! (Jenny's store in Huntsville, Ontario). She enlisted her store manager, Kathie, to assist her in coordinating the week-long celebration, which included a silent auction, raising funds for the Muskoka-Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services; offering free tickets for door prizes with the all purchases; an open house showcasing local women artists; wrapping it all up with a culmination party on March 12. Our most favorite part of the celebration was the "Wonderful Women in the Spotlight" Youtube moment; we invited all participants to bring along photos of women who inspire them (or, even better, bring the women themselves). We took a video while we proudly displayed our wonderful women of choice (click here to see it!).
All the while, we did our best to raise awareness about International Women's Day, and of the positive accomplishments of women within our community and beyond.
We experienced a huge success during Wonderful Women Week's first two years, but we aren't stopping there; it is our vision to see it expand into other businesses and organizations within our community and beyond!
